About Us

Functional, Metabolic, Anti-Aging & Lifestyle Medicine

A personalized, individual approach to your health and wellbeing.  We identify the root causes that are contributing to your symptoms and/or disease and work to address them through a more natural approach, implementing dietary strategies and lifestyle modifications, herbal supplementations, essential oils, and nutritional support.

Our office provides medical consultations using a Functional & Metabolic Medicine approach with an emphasis on identifying root causes.  Our primary goal is to get you feeling better and to start the process of healing. There is no single path for everyone and our approach is individualized for your specific needs and abilities.  Every individual has unique genetics, environmental exposures, stressors, food intolerances, physical abilities, spiritual beliefs, cultural norms, family circumstances that all impact on function.  Disease begins at the molecular level and has to be addressed there in order for healing to be successful.  We offer the tools to help get you there.

We incorporate an integrative approach which may include pharmaceutical treatments, if needed, but this is not our primary focus and diet and lifestyle modifications are the cornerstone of our therapeutic modalities.

We are not a conventional medical office and do not offer acute testing, vaccines, or therapies for acute conditions.  It is important that you maintain a primary care provide for any of these circumstances and you should maintain a relationship with any specialist involved in your care.  We do not take over the care provided by any of these clinicians.  We are complementary to these services and offer a full spectrum approach that may make some of them less necessary but not obsolete.  If you are suffering with an acute medical condition then we advise that you see your primary care provider, urgent care, walk-in clinic or emergency department.

Because we are not conventional in our approach nor setting, our consultations can be performed at our office location, at your home or in an appropriate public venue (eg. coffee shop) where it is relatively quiet and offers enough privacy for the consultation.  We will discuss sensitive medical information and must maintain compliance with HIPPA.

Ultimately, it is about where you feel comfortable.   Our office setting offers comfortable seating, a warm atmosphere with an intent of you feeling at home.  We spend most of our time together talking to each other and getting to know one another.   It would be impossible for us to assist you without getting to know you and how you got to where you are today.

We work in conjunction with your primary care provider or specialist to offer a lifestyle approach to managing or healing from chronic disease.  We will not take on complete assumption of  the care to replace their treatment regimen.  You are the driver and we are the guide.  We will seek the answers (root causes) and provide you with a direction.

  • Appointments must be scheduled in advance.
  • We do not accept walk-ins and do not evaluate or treat acute conditions.
  • Intake Forms and Office Information will be sent to you by email.  Complete the forms and return them to us at least 4 days prior to your scheduled appointment date.  Failure to complete the forms or return them in a timely manner may result in rescheduling of your consultation.
  • With each appointment you will be offered a functional medicine prescription with detailed recommendations on diet, lifestyle modification and supplementation as well as referrals to other holistic providers that offer services beyond our scope of practice.

Additional Offerings:

We offer these services to benefit you in areas that you may need the most help.  It is not always clear, at first, what items should stay in a pantry and which should go.  Shopping through supermarket aisles can be quite confusing and overwhelming, especially with all those health labels and fancy marketing ploys.  Maybe it’s been years since you’ve been in a gym or lifted a weight.  We can help you feel more comfortable with the various machines & equipment and how to make the best use of them with an individualized program designed for your needs and abilities.

Sometimes, you may want to share the information with others but just don’t know where to begin or how to express your new-found knowledge.  We are happy to participate in small-group sessions to discuss these things and answer questions.  Schedule one with us.  You can pick the topic to discuss, select the venue and invite the guests, we will supply the knowledge.

  • An Educational Supermarket Tour at Your  Supermarket:  We will personally accompany you to the supermarket of your choice to educate you on the best and worst foods. You will also be instructed on how to read and understand food labels as well as  how to accomplish your dietary changes based on your personal budget.
  • Refrigerator & Pantry Overhaul We personally meet with you at your home to review the items currently in your pantry and refrigerator. You will receive an overview of potentially health damaging effects that may be present in your home environment. We will offer suggestions on improvements to better optimize your health
  • A (Re) Introduction to the Gym Personalized gym training session to assist you in establishing a training program that incorporates cardio, strength training and supporting classes. You will learn proper form and use of weight machines and cardio equipment as well as determining appropriate exertion levels for you. Please note: This service does not seek to replace the need for a personal trainer who may provide you with the motivation and continued progress that you may need.  We offer this option at Athletic Performance Labs, Phifer Wellness, YMCA of Western NC and Planet Fitness.
  • Meal Planning and Recipes:  Assistance with meal planning and recipes for preparation of healthy meals for you and your family.  This can include options that are Paleo, Low Carb, Keto, Low FODMAP, Vegetarian, Gluten Free.  Meal ideas for specific food sensitivities also offered.  This is provided by Sue Gomes, RN
